End of the Journey:
Hey All! Jim Adams here,
I imagine it won't be a surprise to anyone who might read this that Defiance is no longer a band. After coming to the realization that the music industry was falling apart, and without the internal bond that Defiance had in back in their heydays, it was decided (by me) to shut down all activities to avoid being completely financially wiped out.
Steev and Mark both put it best when they each told me that "we did what we promised we would do, and that was finish this album for Doug."
Having some time to think about what that really means, I have come to agree completely with them. The job is done. Doug is gone, and with him, really...Defiance.
I have since moved on and joined Severed Fifth www.severedfifth.com and will be releasing a full length album in February 2012 titled "Liberate".
To everyone who supported and followed Defiance over the last 25 years, we would like to thank you. Without the fans, we would have just been 5 knuckleheads destroying our hearing and our livers in some basement in Oakland.
The final line up of Defiance was:
Jim Adams - Guitars
Shawn Bozarth - Guitars
Keven Albert - Vocals
Mike Kaufmann - Bass
Burton Ortega - Drums
I'd like to extend a personal "Thank You" to Shawn, Keven and Burton for taking on the impossible. I really enjoyed playing music with you guys, and hope to be able to do exactly that again someday with you.

Defiance Announces New Drummer Burton Ortega!
After struggling with who should be the next drummer for Defiance and having the wrong drummer in place for one show. Defiance has found a bay area gem. Burton comes from a traditional thrash metal background, playing for years with bay area thrashers KAOS, came in and delivered the goods. We were looking for that fifth finger to fill the glove which was something that we felt was essential for a long term fit. We are very excited about Burton joining Defiance and have had so much fun jamming the old and new tunes and can’t wait to unleash the new monster that is Defiance.

Defiance Live Videos Old and New Coming Soon!
Thanks to everyone who made it out to our record release show last Saturday in Berkeley! The turn out was incredible, and you guys made us feel welcomed back to the Bay Area music scene in big way!
Now with the show behind us, we are going to take a little downtime to enjoy the holidays with our family and friends. We plan on hitting the ground running come January. We'll be updating everyone as soon as the pieces start to fall into place.
While Jim is on vacation this week, he will be working with his wife to upload videos and pictures from the record release show, along with some vintage Defiance from *way* back.
The first video has just been posted to YouTube, Facebook and MySpace. It is a video of Defiance live in Detroit in 1990 performing the song "Tribulation" off the Product of Society album. Defiance was on tour with Vio-lence and Flotsam and Jetsam in support of their Void Terra Firma album.
Defiance Announces New Line-up for Record Release Show!
With our first show since 1994 just a couple of days away, we wanted to take this opportunity to let you all know about some pretty major changes in the line-up of the band.
With our new album "The Prophecy" completed, and released on Candlelight Records, both Mark and Steev have moved on to concentrate on their primary bands, Forbidden and Skinlab respectively. We want to publicly thank them both for putting in all the hard work and time to help us finish the album we dedicated together in the memory of our dear friend and guitarist Doug Harrington. We wish both of them continued success in whatever lies ahead for them.
We are very excited to announce the new line up of Defiance for 2010 and beyond. Taking on Doug and Glen's parts on guitar, we welcome Shawn Bozarth on guitar! Taking over the singing duties, we are stoked to announce the addition of Keven Albert (formerly with Kaos).
We will be playing this Saturday night at Blake's on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley CA. Come on out and check us out if you are in the area.

Hey Everyone...We wanted to let you all know that there has been a minor glitch in the system with regards to the release of our new album "The Prophecy". Due to an unforeseen logistical issue, the US release of the album was pushed back by the distributor until November 3rd.
The album is available in Europe, and in the US via the Candlelight USA online store. This set back only affects the distribution of the CD to online stores such as Amazon and iTunes, and to brick and mortars like Best Buy.

Another New Defiance Song Posted Online, the Guitar Duo of Jim Adams and Glen Alvelais Performing Eschaton from "The Prophecy"!
Defiance has posted another song from their new album "The Prophecy" on the band's MySpace page!
The song is a guitar piece written and performed by the duo of Jim Adams and Glen Alvelais (Forbidden,Testament,LD/50).
This song is a mellow instrumental piece that showcases Jim Adams performing a clean, relaxed acoustic style arrangement while Glen Alvelais sores over the top of it. The piece sets the stage for what is to follow it on the album, Sloth. Sloth is a driving intricate all out thrasher!
Another New Defiance Song is Available for Streaming!!
Defiance has posted another song from their new album "The Prophecy" on the band's MySpace page!
This latest release to the public is called "Desert Sands". It is a thrasher about the political and social issues that are going on with regards to the US wars, and the horror they create.
This song is hightlighted by an intense guitar dual between Jim Adams and Glen Alvelais. The two go back and forth in what could only be described as an insane showcase of the two's six string talents.
Help support the Thrash Metal scene by buying our album and coming out to the shows!!
We are looking forward to seeing all of you on tour soon!

New Defiance Album Artwork and Track Listing Revealed!
STUNNING RETURN TO FORM FROM THRASH METAL LEGENDS DEFIANCE!!!
Reformed after a 15 year hiatus, bay area thrashers Defiance return with The Prophecy. Currently featuring vocalist Steev Esquivel (Skinlab), guitarist Jim Adams, bassist Mike Kaufmann and drummer Mark Hernandez (Vio-lence, Forbidden), the band recorded the album in San Francisco and in early interviews Kaufmann confirmed, we always felt the band broke up too early so we plan to use this opportunity to pick up where we left off. Formed in 1985 Defiance recorded their first record in 1988. Product of Society (Roadrunner) was produced by Jeff Waters (Annihilator) and immediately found the band an impressive worldwide audience. Beyond Recognition, the bands third and last album was released in 1992. In 2005 the band finally regrouped after years of requests from fans. The band signed with Candlelight in late 2008 and immediately set to work.
The Prophecy will be released on Candlelight records 19th of October in Europe

Defiance Almost Done with New Album!!!
We wanted to drop you all a line to let you know that as of yesterday, Defiance has finished tracking the new album for Candlelight Records! Candlelight is looking at a Fall 2009 release date for first album from Defiance since 1992's Beyond Recognition released by Roadrunner Records.
We finished up at Trident Studios on Sunday with Jim and Mike completing the last of their parts, and Steev came down to help arrange some last minute additions to the lead sections with Jim on a couple of songs. Snake came by in the afternoon to deliver all the completed vocals he recorded at his studio in Berkeley "Green dot Studios".
All we have left is to get Glen's solos and to have Juan finish mixing and mastering the album!
Defiance is working with Travis Smith on the album cover artwork and concept.
Once the album is released Defiance will be looking to support the effort in Europe and perhaps the US, if the right opportunity arises.
A short video of some of the sessions have been posted to YouTube.

Defiance Comes to Facebook
Defiance has just joined the latest Internet craze, Facebook. If you are a fan of Defiance and want to keep up with the goings on with the band, feel free to join our new Facebook group.
We haven't given an update in a while, and thought we should let everyone know that we have completed all the basic tracks for the 11 songs that will be on our first album for Candlelight records. All that is left are some vocals and guitar leads for the last four tunes we recorded at the end of 2008 at Trident Studios.
We are going to have a special guest on the album too. Glen Alvelais has offered to help us by busting out some sick leads to help fill the void left by Doug. We are stoked to have him on our album, and we truly appreciate it.
Steev has been hard at work busting out his tracks at Greendot studios.
Here is an update straight from the source:
ahhh shit ...as if i don't have enough metal in my life........thought i would update everyone on the new Defiance album....which is coming out slammin by the way
Everything is sounding bad ass , and sure to be one of the best Thrash album to come out in a while. The guys have really fukin outdone themselves this time. What was meant to be some friends having fun and paying tribute to our fallin brother Doug Harrington, has completly turned into a monster that none of us even knew it would turn into. Lot's of Thrash and tons of screaming!!
Vocals for the first 6 songs are 95% done and recorded ,the end of the recording process is near and sounding fukin killer at that. Juan should be throwing some mixes together here very soon, as were shooting for a mid 2009 release ........we'll be sure to keep you all looped.
Reunited Oakland, California thrashers DEFIANCE have finally completed all the drum tracks for their first album in over 15 years. According to the band, "Mark [Hernandez] knocked out the last four songs, and now we are gearing up for completing the guitar and bass tracks. The album will likely be released in spring of 2009 via Candlelight Records."

MetalMind Productions Set to Re-release Beyond Recognition
"Beyond Recognition" - re-release of the classic album by Defiance
Defiance is nowadays considered one of the most inspiring thrash metal acts from the period of late 80’s/early 90’s, while “Beyond Recognition” stands as a true classic and the group’s best work yet. Without question, the band reached its artistic peaks on “Beyond Recognition”. With a new producer and without the label pressure, the band could afford more freedom in recording the follow-up to “Void Terra Firma”. More complex and technically evolved, the album presented a rough, heavy sound the band was searching for all these years.
And today Metal Mind Productions presents re-release of the third studio album from 1992 in a new digipak edition limited to 1000 copies. New edition includes 7 bonus tracks. Digitally remastered using 24-Bit process on golden disc. The re-issue will be available on 10th November 2008 in Europe and 25th November in USA (via MVD).

You might say that for Defiance it all started in the perfect time and in the perfect place. The San Francisco Bay Area in the middle 80’s was an excellent basis for forming a thrash metal band and guitarist Brad Bowers along with drummer Matt Van Der Ende were perfectly aware of that fact. Together, as high school friends, they brought the idea of their own band – Defiance – to life in 1985, with the name coming from an incident when Brad and his, at that time, girlfriend were suspended from school for… well, defiance. Their “Hypothermia” demo caught the attention of Roadrunner Records and in 1988 Defiance got the chance to travel to Canada and record their debut album – “Product of Society”. Produced in by the famous Annihilator guitarist, Jeff Waters, the LP proved to be a huge success on the local Bay Area scene, gathering hundreds of fans and a handful of positive reviews from the critics. One drawback that they mentioned, however, was that Defiance’s style was too similar to other bands. This changed with the second album, “Void Terra Firma”, released in 1990. The fan base grew stronger and stronger, so did the band’s reputation.
The third album was to confirm whether the band was able to achieve the highlight of their career. All became clear in 1992… With a new producer and without the label pressure, the band could afford more freedom in recording the follow-up to “Void Terra Firma”. Adams remembers the recording most pleasurably: “We had Rob Beaton as producer – a fantastic producer, who was actually a really good friend of ours – well, we didn’t know him before, but doing the process of doing the record we became really good friends with him.” Jim admits that at the beginning, working with Beaton was not at all that easy: “He had his own way of doing things where it was right or wasn’t done at all. We went into Bay View Studios in Richmond and the nice thing with this record was that we had time. We went to a very nice studio; it was a smaller, more modest studio, so we were able to afford a lot more time in the studio, not to mention that Rob, being a very good producer, wasn’t like this big name producer. So we went in there, we worked on that one for like a month, month and a half at first and it was a really good process, a lot of things we did differently from the other albums. Instead of Doug and I doing all the rhythms and all the songs – you know, I’m playing all my parts, he’s playing all his - Rob had a different theory on how to do that. Essentially it was whoever played the rhythm best will do all the rhythm tracks for any given section of the song, so you could be listening to, say, ‘Inside Looking Out’ and in any given time you hear four different takes of the guitar which had to be absolutely perfect or he would make us redo it, which was very painful, but from one rhythm to the next you could hear the final product – the idea is that the guitars are very tight, very crunchy – we actually borrowed Lee Altus’ (from Heathen) Mesa Boogie head which gave us all the phenomenal tones.” Without question, the band reached its artistic peaks on “Beyond Recognition”. More complex and technically evolved, the album presented a rough, heavy sound the band was searching for all these years.
Sadly, due to the decline of thrash metal in the early 90’s and lack of interest from the label, Jim Adams left Defiance shortly after the release of the third LP. The band kept on going, soon taking quite an unpredictable turn. With new vocalist Dave White (ex-Heathen) the group changed their name to Inner Threshold and started working on some tracks with producer Rob Beaton. Never leaving the demo stage, they eventually changed their name to Under and lasted on the scene recording demos and playing gigs until 1999. In 2004 Matt Van Der Ende, Doug Harrington, Steev Esquivel, Mike Kaufmann and Jim Adams finally decided to reform Defiance. The renewed group begun working on a 6-track EP containing premiere material. The process was violently interrupted by Doug’s death in 2006, when he lost his fight with cancer. Still, the band decided to finish the work, in Doug’s honor.
In 2007 Metal Mind Productions released a box entitled “Insomnia” containing 3 albums deleted for almost 10 years. All albums included bonus tracks plus lyrics to all songs. The box also included 28 page booklet with a story about the band. Special 3 CD digipack edition was limited to 2000 numerated copies.
Philadelphia: Candlelight Records today
announces the signing of Oakland , California based Defiance . The band
currently featuring vocalist Steev Esquivel (Skinlab), guitarist Jim
Adams, bassist Mike Kaufmann and drummer Mark Hernandez (Vio-lence,
Forbidden), has started early tracking of their new album at Trident
Studios and Greendot Studios in East Bay . The currently untitled album
is expected for Spring 2009 release.
Formed in 1985, Defiance have recorded
three albums all for Roadrunner Records - Product of Society (1989,
produced by Jeff Waters/Annihilator), Void Terra Firma (1990, produced
by John Cuniberti), and Beyond Recognition (1992, produced by Rob Beaton).
In 1994 the members put Defiance on hiatus allowing them opportunity
to work on outside projects. In 2005 after requests from fans and new
vigor on the part of band members, Defiance reunited. In an interview
with popular portal Metal-Temple.com
Mike Kaufmann reveals,
We have received
lots of messages from fans who have said they would love to hear some
new Defiance . We always felt the band broke up too early so we plan
to use this opportunity to pick up where we left off.
Defiance along with their fellow mosh
pit peers of the 80’s (Testament, Exodus, Death Angel) contributed
to the rise and immense popularity of thrash metal for over a decade.
In recent years with the reformations of many of the classic bands,
fans have been given opportunity to re-embrace the aggressive sound
of the American-flavor of the genre.
Defiance plan to finish recording of
their Candlelight debut by year’s end. The band expect to announce
touring plans in the early part of 2009.

Update from Steev on the New Defiance Album
Well, I finally got my ass in the studio and completed one song for the upcoming release. Once again back at Trident studios working with producer Juan Urteaga, this shit sounds fuckin sick!!! No shit, I mean, after almost 15 years of not being a band the guys wrote an amazing record. And a true DEFIANCE record at that.
The guitars and bass are fuckin brutal, the absolute best tones the band has ever had. The drums are amazing — Mark Hernandez really stepped things up, tons of slammin double bass; the kid was on fire and it shows. Vocally, it's got to be one of the most challenging recordings I have ever done. It's been awhile since I had to sing to music tuned as high as DEFIANCE (E 440). Definitely a challenge as I'm pushing myself to return to more of a singing style verses my SKINLAB voice, which is much lower and more aggressive than what is called for in DEFIANCE.
I'm really stoked to be apart of the album and doing my best to make the old-school DEFIANCE fans happy as well as making our brother Dougie proud.

March 7, 2007:
Last weekend, Defiance bass player Mike Kaufmann began recording bass tracks for the band's 4th album and first effort in over 13 years. The recording session comes more than 3 months after the loss of long time guitar player Doug Harrington.
"I knew it was my turn to start tracking and I think I needed time to reflect and think about the tragic loss of a dear friend, brother, and major contributor to Defiance music. It took me a while before I could even start practicing the songs again but once I started, it wasn't long before I felt I was ready to get it done. Doug and I had several conversations about how he wanted me to play over certain guitar parts that he wrote and I kept that in mind throughout the entire session"
"It was almost surreal talking to him about the album and how he wanted it to sound and knowing that he wouldn't be around to hear the finished product. During the last 2 or 3 weeks of his life, we spent a lot of time talking about what he wanted and didn't want the album to sound like. One of his main concerns was that we stick to our roots and make sure this is a 'thrash metal' album."
"I think that we, as a band, feel that this will be our best recording ever and much of that has to do with Doug's contribution and hard work even though he knew the end was near."
It's a given that this album will be dedicated to Doug.

Doug Harrington 1966 - 2006
It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of our dear friend, bandmate, and artist, Defiance guitarist Doug Harrington. At his request, and for the privacy of his family, we did not make his condition known, but Doug had been quietly battling cancer for much of this year, until Tuesday night when he finally succumbed to it. He went peacefully and in the presence of his wife and family.
Doug was however able to participate in several of the writing and recording sessions for the new DEFIANCE record, including one just 3 days before he passed. When we found out about Doug's condition, we had already been writing and rehearsing for the new album, and Doug continued to go to practices and participate in the songwriting and it was his wish that we finish the album without him. And although it will be extremely difficult, we will honor his request, and you can expect to see the record in stores this Spring.
Doug was an extremely talented musician, and an even more wonderful human being, and he will be sadly missed by all. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to all of Doug's family and friends.
Please check back for more information, comments and updates. Also, feel
free to leave any comments at the guestbook at www.defiance1.com
October 20, 2006:
Just wanted to check back in to let you all know that the recording sessions last weekend at Trident Studios turned out great! The guitars are almost done! Jim layed down some heavy crunch tones and leads. Doug added his brand of Metal afterwards and the results sound killer!
The plan now is for two or three more recording sessions for Doug to finish his leads and harmonies and for Mike to record his bass tracks. After that it is time for Steev to lay down some wicked vocals.
We have just posted some new pics from last weekend's sessions Here. Check them out!
October 8, 2006:
As previously reported, along with our first full length album in over ten years, Defiance is also working on putting together a DVD that will cronicle our entire career from 1985 to the present. We are working with Dave Anderson from Rokhedz (www.rokhedz.net) to capture the Defiance album recording sessions as part of the DVD. Dave has put together some screenshots of this footage for the website.
We have just posted some of Dave's pictures from the September recording sessions at Trident Studios Here.
We are heading back into the studio next weekend, so keep checking back for more news and updates!

Defiance Recording Update
We wanted to give you an update on how the recording has been coming along. We spent all last weekend in Trident Studios recording the drum tracks for the first six songs. Mark absolutely crushed! The drums sound heavy as heck and with Juan's engineering work, sound unbelievable!
Next sessions will be to record all the guitar tracks (rhythm and lead) for these first six songs. Doug and Jim will be recording all their parts October 14th and 15th at Trident Studios.
We'll keep you all posted on how it progresses.
Video clips from the sessions will be available at some point at Corporate Punishment Records website Here.
Photos of the sessions will be added to the Defiance website Here.
September 8, 2006:
We have been hard at work writing new material and preparing to head into the studio. The date is now set for September 15th to enter Trident Studios in Concord, CA with producer Juan Urteaga (Exodus, Skinlab, Vile) to start laying down tracks for our first album in over 10 years!
We are all really excited about the new songs. Once the sessions are completed, we will post a song here, on this website.

Bay Area thrashers DEFIANCE ink deal with Corporate Punishment Records:
Oakland thrashers DEFIANCE, Best known for their seminal late 80's/early 90's Roadrunner releases Void Terra Firma and Beyond Recognition, have inked a deal with LA based Corporate Punishment Records, who will release the groups as-yet-untitled fourth LP in late 2006.
Part of the so-called "second wave" of Bay Area Thrash (which also included the likes of Forbidden, Vio-lence, Death Angel, and Testament), DEFIANCE officially disbanded in 1994, after the departure of vocalist Steev Esquivel (who would go on to form Skinlab, and later Re:Ignition), while the remaining members, with the addition of vocalist Dave Godfrey White (Heathen), formed Inner Threshold, which would also eventually disband.
In 2005, rumors of a reformed Defiance sent waves of interest through the burgeoning Thrash Metal community, until it was finally confirmed that the band had in fact reunited and were at work on their first new material in over a decade.
"I'm really stoked to be playing with Defiance again." Says guitarist Jim Adams, "We have been working on some new songs and ideas that are really heavy and complex. We are not moving away from the Bay Area Thrash style that people will expect to hear from us, no detuning or anything like that. We are writing pure straight forward thrash Metal."
Bassist/Founder Mike Kauffman adds, "We've been working hard at writing new songs and we're all looking forward to working with Corporate Punishment. We hold ourselves to a very high standard when it comes to songwriting and I'm sure our fans will not be disappointed."
In addition to the classic lineup of Doug Harrington (Guitars), Jim Adams (Guitars), Mike Kaufmann (Bass) and vocalist Steev Esquivel, the LP will also feature (ex Vio-lence,Torque) drummer Mark Hernandez.
The band is set to enter Trident Studios in Concord, CA with producer Juan Urteaga (Exodus, Skinlab, Vile) this summer to begin work on the album. Upon completion of the LP, the band is looking forward to playing selected shows and festivals
In addition to the new LP, CPR will also release the bands first long-form DVD, Decade(s) of DEFIANCE, compiling hours of live performance, interview and archival footage chronicling their nearly 20 years of existence

We are excited to announce that 'Flatline' from Vengince (www.vengince.com) has doubled his drumming duties and joined Defiance as our new drummer! Adding this final piece to the puzzle allows us to move forward with the EP which we have been working towards for the last six months. We hope to be able to solidify the arrangements over the next couple of months and head into the recording studio in the October/November time frame.

Defiance to begin work on studio project:
Happy New Year Everyone! We wanted to let you know what we have been doing and what we are planning on for
2005. Last year we were talking with each other about possibly doing a reunion show. Since then Matt has moved
to New York and landed a gig in a touring company that will be crossing North America over the next year performing
the Broadway musical 'Wicked'. Steev spent a couple of months touring with Exodus. After returning home, Steev
has been playing and recording with both RE:Ignition and Skinlab. It has become apparent to us that with these two
being so busy with other projects, the idea of a reunion show would be pretty hard to pull off. We have all talked
about it and decided the best thing we could do moving forward would be to move away from the idea of a reunion
show and work instead on writing some new material and head into the studio later this year. Starting now, we will
start putting together a few songs in the Defiance vein and hopefully head into the studio this summer while Matt is
in town, and lay down a few new songs. We are all pretty stoked about the idea of getting back together to work
on this project after all these years!
We have also re-launched our website www.defiance1.com with an all new look and feel to start our new project in
this new year. Many, Many thanks to Tony Williams of 444 Design for all his help and work to get the new website
designed and launched! We would also like to thank Max Duijsens of Wrecking Crew for his help getting the original site launched last August.
Stay tuned to this site for more news and updates regarding our progress on this new heavy metal music mission.
Jim's thoughts on the loss of Dimebag Darrell Abbott, no words can explain:
While I never had the privilege to meet D. Darrell, his music greatly influenced
Rest in Peace Darrell...God Bless You!!!!

Steev Esquivel will front EXODUS on their rescheduled South American tour, Defiance
reunion on hold:
It has been reported on Blabbermouth.net,
and the Exodus Website
that Steev will be the touring singer for Exodus on their South American tour,
replacing Steve "Zetro" Souza. The tour has been rescheduled for late
October. Because Steev will be very busy in rehearsals with Exodus for the next
few months and then on tour with the band, the Defiance reunion is going to
be put on hold until after the tour is completed. At that time we should have
a better idea of what is going to happen going forward. While Steev is gone
the rest of the Defiance band will continue to work on songs and continue to
maintain and add new content to the Official Defiance website www.defiance1.com
