Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and is imperative for vital bodily functions. The main source of calcium is dairy products. Foods such as broccoli, kale, spinach and almonds also contain calcium but you would have to consume several portions of these foods to get the recommended amount of daily calcium.

Most of the body’s calcium is stored in the bones and teeth and about 1 percent is stores in the body’s fluids. If your body’s fluids fall below this level, your body takes what it needs from your bones. This is what creates weak and porous bones.

If you are a vegetarian or are lactose intolerant (problems digesting lactose, the naturally occuring milk sugars), you may not be getting adequate amounts of calcium.

Post-menopausal women need an adequate supply of calcium to maintain bone health. As mentioned earlier, post-menopausal women are at extreme risk of breaking bones because bone is lost at a rapid rate during the five years after menopause.
